14 Captivating Christmas Activities for Kids (2024)

Christmas is a wonderful time of year! So much so, that December can feel like the longest month ever for the kids and they have a great way of getting under your feet during a time when you really don’t need that!

A key way to get through to Christmas without too many tears (mostly yours) or tantrums (also yours), is to keep the kids occupied with plenty of activities.

Here are some great Christmas activities for kids that are sure to keep them engaged and have that exciting day feel like it's arrived sooner.

1. Make Christmas Decorations

If you have restless kids, get the craft box out and keep idle hands busy making Christmas decorations for the tree, house, door or as gifts. Pull up some ideas on Pinterest to help get their creative brains working or you might just find that they’ll have plenty of their own ideas.

2. Write Christmas Cards for Extended Family

Grandparents, aunties, uncles, cousins and friends would all love to get a hand written card from that special child in their life and if they’ve made the card in the activity above, even better! It’s a great way to keep that connection between your children and their extended family, especially if they’ve been separated for long periods of time or haven’t been able to see them throughout the year.

3. Decorate the House

Once those decorations are all created and / or the other decorations are out from storage, let the kids loose in the house to decorate to their heart’s content. If you like things to be done a certain way with your Christmas decorations, either let them have one section of the house all to themselves or give them the guidance they need to execute on the decorating as you’d like.

4. Santa Letters / Videos

Writing letters to Santa has definitely been taken up a notch over recent years with postal companies and technology advances meaning kids can track their letters, get responses from the North Pole (that we don’t have to write) and just generally provide a magical experience all round. It’s a great activity for the kids to do (and a great way to get gift ideas!) and now that they’re in the digital age, encourage them to sharpen up their filming skills to send a video ‘letter’ to Santa and see what fun they have creating the set, script and outfits, just for Santa.

5. Christmas Performance

Following on from that theme, set the kids the challenge of working on a Christmas Performance for the family. Ask them to come up with a skit or song to perform, give them access to the dress ups and set a date for the performance. It’ll keep them busy for a few hours and no doubt the end result will provide a lot of …joy to your day.

6. Baking

This is a great tradition for many families at Christmas with everyone at home and sometimes visitors coming to stay. Having plenty of baking in the pantry is a great way to keep everyone fed and happy. Here are some ideas that are easy to get the kids helping you out with:

  • Christmas Bikkies – with Christmas icing
  • Christmas Bliss Balls
  • White Christmas
  • Christmas Fudge

7. Christmas Movie Marathon

There’s nothing quite like a Christmas movie and with so many to choose from, if you need a day indoors to escape the heat or the rain, then a Christmas movie marathon is perfect. Here are a few options to get you started:

  • The Grinch
  • Home Alone
  • Elf
  • The 12 Dogs of Christmas
  • Jingle all the way
  • Disney’s A Christmas Carol
  • Shrek the Halls
  • The Polar Express
  • The Santa Clause

8. Gingerbread House Workshop

This has become more and more popular with many retailers now selling gingerbread house building kits. A tradition we’ve picked up from the US, it’s another great way to, not only keep the kids entertained but also have them exercising their creativity and motor skills all in one go. The final results are sure to be impressive and yummy! Just make sure you take photos before you tuck in.

9. Christmas-themed Scavenger Hunt

Kids love a scavenger hunt and it’s a great way to keep them engaged for a few hours. Give each child a list of Christmastime treasures to find, along with a basket for collecting the items. Think hidden candy canes, specific types of ornaments, ribbons and Christmas cookies. Or send them on a hunt for an early gift with each clue taking them to a new location until the finally get to the location of the gift!

10. Make DIY Gift Wrap

Like the letter writing, nothing says thoughtful like DIY Christmas wrap. There’s a couple of ways you can do this. Either place a long sheet of plain brown or white paper, provide the kids with the relevant drawing tools (paint, crayons, felts, pencils, stamps, stickers, glitter etc) and let them go to town. When you’re ready to wrap the presents, you’ve got beautiful, custom-made wrapping paper that will impress family and friends. Alternatively, wrap each present in the plain paper and have the children do their artwork once wrapped so they can customise it to suit the recipient of the gift!

11. Create a Christmas Advent Calendar

There are advent calendars abound in stores these days, but why not make it extra special this year and have the kids make their own. There are a variety of ways you can make them, whether each day has a gift/treat or a saying or even a little task for the child to complete. There are some really cute ideas here.

12. Host Christmas Karaoke

One of the best things about Christmas is the music – let’s be honest, whenever ‘All I want for Christmas’ comes on, we’re either channelling our inner Mariah or recreating that Love Actually scene and hitting that yooooouuu with all we can muster. So, make a night out of this enthusiasm for Christmas music and host a Christmas Karaoke night. The kids will love singing all their favourite carols at the top of their lungs and no doubt, mum and dad will too.

13. Take a Drive to See the Lights

Christmas really is magical and never is this more felt than when you take a drive around your local streets to see all the pretty lights in the neighbourhood. Some families really go all out and if you’re lucky enough you might live somewhere that has a neighbourhood Santa inviting kids onto the property to go through their light ‘grotto’!

14. Decorate the Springfree

Your Springfree Trampoline is the perfect structure for all things Christmas. Whether you want to attach Christmas lights, decorations or wrap it up in a large bow. Leave the kids in the yard with various Christmas paraphernalia and see where their imaginations take them. Hopefully they'll burn a bit of energy in the process.

Wishing you all a safe and happy Christmas season.
