When’s a good time to become a mother? Well Science could soon give you the answer…

Modern women want to achieve a lot in this lifetime… a quality education, travel, career and of course motherhood.

Back_Up_Plan_poster-535x856

But can we have it all? Experts warn us women that our body clocks are ticking and the older we get the harder it is to fall pregnant.

Well thanks to a break-through in science, a simple blood test could tell women as young as 20 how long she has left to start a family.

Researcher Fahimeh Ramezani Tehrani took blood samples from 266 women aged between 20 and 49 and measured levels of anti-Mullerian hormone or AMH (a chemical key to the maturation of a woman’s eggs).

He also obtained medical and lifestyle information of all the women and used it to link falling AMH levels to the women’s dwindling store of eggs to calculate when they would go through menopause.

So far 63 women of those who took part have reached menopause and the predications have been accurate to within a four-month period.

If the testing continues to be reliable, it could lead to be a home testing kit, which could be brought at pharmacies.

Does this give you peace-of-mind that you could possibly have the ability to plan out your life based on your body clock?

Who needs a holiday?

Well according to an online study, Australian’s are the third most holiday deprived nation in the developed world. Travel Company Expedia found that Aussie’s took 16.5 days annual leave on average, while workers in France (whom take the most holidays) took 34.5 days a year.

holiday destination

Why? Apparently we are shying away from the holidays because we fear it would put our careers at risk. Especially workers aged 18 – 34 as they think they will miss out on an important decision at work. Older workers on the hand tend to save up their annual leave and cash it in.

How do you feel about holidays?

Are you one to save -up your holidays? Tell us why?

If so here is a little temptation ….

Child restraints in Taxis. What’s your take?

taxi

I’ve just returned from a girlie trip in Melbourne with my mum, my sister and her 7 month old daughter Tia.

Travelling with an infant we tried to avoid getting taxi’s as much as possible but there were situations when it just couldn’t be avoided.

To be completely honest, I never once thought about how babies travel in Taxi’s, I just assumed you could order cabs with restraints installed.

I was surprised to say the least when I discovered that child restraints were not mandatory and all you had to do was hold on to your infant when travelling.

Working for an innovative company where we have taken a 70 year old design, spent millions of dollars in research to come up with a Trampoline design that keeps your kids safe and ‘prevent’ injury, I am shocked that a public system so old in tradition is yet take the same type of initiative.

The Taxi industry is against the idea of mandatory restraints, saying that shared devices would be disease carriers that would put children’s health at risk.

Kidsafe Victoria President Mark Stokes called for a trail of overhead lockers in cabs to hold child safety devices as a solution.

What do you think about the making restraints mandatory? Have you ever had a bad experience in a cab with your children?

Do your kids know what to do in an Emergency?

I received a link to a very cute YouTube video this week, showing a 5-year-old girl talking the emergency services through a crisis happening in her house – her father is struggling to breath and needs an ambulance.

Your probably thinking ‘cute’ would not be the best word to describe that sort of situation, but if you watch the video you will see why I describe it so.

kids

As cute as it may be, there is also an important message in this. How would your kids react if presented with a situation like Savannah? Have you educated your kids on what to do in an emergency, what numbers to call and how to act?

This lesson could be the difference between life and death.

The Triple Zero Kids Challenge is a great tool in educating your kids in an engaging way.

The game is aimed at 5–10 year-olds and uses colourful, animated characters in nine interactive scenarios to provide lessons to children on the confident and appropriate use of Triple Zero.

Children will learn the important information they need to provide to operators, such as:

• Which emergency service they need help from,

• What the nature of the emergency is and

• Where the emergency is happening.

Try it out for yourself first http://kids.triplezero.gov.au/.

Do you have any tips or suggestion that you have found work well in teaching your kids about emergencies?

Australian Women’s Health Mag says…..The Future is here with Springfree™ Trampoline

Undefined

Springfree™ Trampoline is featured in Australia Women’s Health Magazine as the future in exercise and health that is right here right now for people like you and me to reap the benefits from.

Australian Womens Health_May2010_jpeg

The article goes on to say that,

“Bouncing up and down is nothing new. But NASA recently found that 10 minutes on a trampoline burns the same about of KJ’s as a 30-minute run, with 80 per cent less bone impact. This tramp is the first spring-free option with soft edges, so you won’t crack your noggin if you misjudge that somersault.”

Another health benefit from re-bounding is the good it does for our lymphatic system. Bouncing gets the blood circulating, hence helping to eliminate toxins built up in our body.

The lymphatic system can be compared to the dump for our bodies. It stores all the toxins and waste products in our body and you can only get this flowing by:

  1. Gravity
  2. Internal Massage of the lymph ducts and
  3. Exercise by rebounding (i.e. Jumping on a Springfree™ Trampoline)

So I hope you are getting your iPod, some comfy clothes and heading outside to enjoy some ‘me’ time on the Springfree™ Trampoline.

Do you use the Springfree™ Trampoline as part of your exercise routine? I would love to hear more about at erin@springfree.com.au

Are your kids over-eating on the wrong foods after school?

A colorful display of fresh fruits

Research shows that kids aged 5 – 8 are hungry little vegemite’s after school but they are eating too much of the ‘wrong’ foods.

The research studied the habits of children both during and after school, revealing kids are indulging in processed, carbohydrate rich foods after school such as biscuits, cereal bars and confectionery to which 60 % is sugars, 30% is fat.

Such highly processed foods are also digested rapidly, leaving kids vulnerable to energy fluctuations and overeating.

Essential Baby (www.essentialbaby.com.au) interviewed Specialist Obesity Dietitian from The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, Susie Burrell and she had some great advice.

“Consumption of such highly processed, non-nutritious foods means that children are missing out on key nutrients, are unlikely to be kept full and more likely to overeat during the after school period and then eat poorly at dinner time,” said Ms Burrell.

“While it is normal for growing children to be hungry after school, it is important for parents to remember that after school snacks for children need to contain some positive nutritional properties such as protein, low GI, wholegrain carbohydrates and calcium.”

The Children’s Hospital at Westmead has put together a fact sheet with some healthy Snack Ideas for parents… http://www.chw.edu.au/parents/factsheets/fosnackj.htm

Am I the only disaster prone ‘grown-up’ out there that NEEDS a Springfree Trampoline?

Undefined

I’m one of the world’s clumsiest/ disaster prone people – I’m happy to admit it, ‘cos I sure can’t hide it.

Most parents purchase the Springfree™ Trampoline because it’s the safest trampoline, and they can have confidence their kids can exercise without injury.

This is true! But are there any other ‘grown-up’s’ out there that enjoy the safety of our trampoline to avoid life’s general mishaps?

I love jumping on our trampoline – it has me the fittest I’ve ever been and confident that I can exercise safely. I also know when jumping, I’m in a “padded cell” and for a period am protected from my clumsy/ disaster prone nature.

To give you an idea of the last 5 days on a trip to the US, and back to Canada… my top three (and these are the top of many) are:

  1. Managing to irritate a customs officer into giving me the full once over (fortunately it didn’t get quite to the rubber glove stage) but still, I was patted down, and questioned to a point of compromise
  2. After finally, getting over 2 delays and a grounded plane, the flight I was on was HIT BY LIGHTENING travelling into San Francisco. Let’s just say, huge bang, big blast of sparks, and 30 seconds of utter fear before the captain announced “Ladies and Gentlemen, no need to worry, we were just hit by lightening, but fortunately we’re okay”??!!
  3. To add insult to injury, today, I was responsible for “killing” the Springfree™ Trampoline van on my first trip back to the office. Take one major 8 lane Canadian highway, a large wrapped Springfree™ Trampoline Van, and add me as a driver and of course the transmission will blow. Fortunately, while I tweeted my distress (waiting crouched on the passenger side with rush hour traffic zooming by after crossing 4 lanes with loss of speed and hazards and horn going – did I mention I was listed as “the slow vehicle blocking the exit lane” on the traffic report?!) a twitter friend found my frightened image amusing… and crafted this wonderful PhotoShop picture for me…
When my transmission broke on the highway...

When my transmission broke on the highway...

Let’s just say, I think I’m safer in a Springfree Trampoline.

Is anyone else this accident prone?

Kids Fun Summer Activity Ideas

Undefined

With school almost out for summer, the question of finding interactive quality activities for kids pops up again. It can be so hard to constantly entertain, without racking up a huge activities bill.

We have a bias of course :), but think the Springfree™ Trampoline is one of the best backyard solutions – your kids will enjoy safe outdoor play summer after summer.

Enjoying the Springfree Trampoline

I also came across some fantastic cost-effective play ideas on Nickelodeon’s Parents Connect site, and hope our Mum’s and Dad’s out there find them helpful:

Make Peanut Butter Bird Feeders. Tie strings to pine cones, or to a bagel, stale bread, or even a corn cob from last night’s dinner. Cover with peanut butter; roll in bird seed. Hang the feeders in the trees and wait for the birds to come visit. What birds do your kids see?

Make your own chalk by mixing one cup Plaster of Paris with 1/2 cup of water. For colorful chalk, add a spoonful or two of tempura paint. Pour into an egg carton or into a toilet paper tube (but tape up one end) and let dry over night.

Whip up a batch of homemade playdough. Mix two cups of flour, one cup of hot water, and one cup of salt. Add drops of food coloring to make any shade you wish. Wrap the playdough in plastic wrap when you’re done, and it will stay fresh for a long time.

Make your own volcano. Surround a tall jar or drinking glass with newspapers to build up the volcano (you may want to tape it to the table or to a cardboard base). Cover with aluminum foil and make a hole where the jar is. Pour baking soda into the jar. Add some dishwashing liquid and food coloring. Pour in some vinegar, and stand back!

Plan a picnic—kids love them! Let them concoct the menu and assemble the sandwiches. Cheese and crackers or peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are great take-along snacks.

Make a paper-mache animal! Mix one part flour to two parts water; add a pinch of salt to form a thick paste. Cover an inflated balloon with strips of newspaper covered in paper mache. Once dry, use halved toilet paper rolls and fasten them on for ears. Let dry. Paint and decorate to make a pig, cow, dog, or cat.

We’d love to hear your activity ideas – I know our Mum’s and Dad’s are always looking for good suggestions!

Cuppa Tea Anyone?

Undefined

Many people can’t start the day without a nice hot cuppa tea but now there is another reason to enjoy your tea. Research has found that drinking tea can cut the risk of ovarian Cancer.

CupOfTea

And best of all, it can be any tea variety from black, green or herbal.

These findings emerged from a QLD Institute of Medical Research study in Australia where they looked at the food and lifestyle habits of 2700 women, half of whom had a history of ovarian cancer.

The key difference between the two groups was the tea intake. Women who drank four or more cups of tea per day may have reduced the risk of ovarian cancer by 30 per cent. Exactly how it reduces the cancer risk is being explored in the US as we speak.

Well I am off on a tea break ;) Cuppa Anyone?
